Types of Cracks in Concrete Columns and their Causes

Four types of cracks developed in reinforced concrete column are diagonal cracks, horizontal cracks, splitting cracks, corrosion cracks. The causes of cracks in columns can be incorrect design, faulty construction or overloading, corrosion of reinforcement, isolated settlement of foundations, creep and shrinkage. This crack can cause the loss of strength, stability, durability, and detrimentally influence aesthetics.

Types of Cracks in Concrete Columns

Diagonal Cracks

If diagonal cracks occurs it will cause damage through the entire face column anywhere along its height. This will happen due to insufficient load bearing capacity of the column, poor reinforcement steel and inadequate cross-section. It has to be dealt properly as it impacts structural

soundness.

Horizontal Cracks

Mainly it occurs at the junction of beam and column and on column face where tensile stress is large. This is due to the effect of shear force and direct load and uniaxial bending because of insufficient moment resistance capacity, poor reinforcements or disposition of installed reinforcement. Horizontal cracks substantially reduce the shear strength of the column leading to a greatly increased risk of failure. So, it is required to be tackled as soon as possible.

Splitting Cracks

Splitting cracks in reinforced concrete column are short parallel vertical cracks with non-uniform width. This is due to Insufficient steel reinforcement, and low concrete quality. The ultimate Load carrying capacity of the column surpassed when concrete cross section is inadequate or reinforcement ratio is insufficient or combination thereof.

Corrosion Cracks

Corrosion cracks in concrete columns are developed along the line of reinforcements. This type of cracks is normally consistent in width and widen as the column is ageing. This happens due to reinforcement corrosion and poor bond between steel bars and concrete. It has to be cured otherwise corrosion will increase.
